In the comic book, Freeland was actually named Southside Metropolis aka Suicide Slum. Black Lightning actually spoke in jive, which was stated to be part of Jefferson Pierce’s way of throwing people off from his true identity. If you look at the first iterations of Luke Cage and Black Lightning, you’ll notice that both characters resemble many of the macho man characters from Blaxploitation films. Isabella was an experienced writer who had also done work for Marvel on Luke Cage.
